Illustrative work borrows from drawing rather than from tattooing. Etching and engraving hatchwork, sketchbook lines left visibly loose, storybook and woodcut looks — designs that read as though they were pulled from a page rather than designed for skin. What to know about illustrative work

  • Hatching is shading made of lines, and lines merge over time. Cross-hatched areas can darken into a solid patch after a decade, so the spacing your artist chooses matters more than it looks like it does.
  • The loose sketch look is deliberate and hard. Stray construction lines and unfinished edges have to be placed on purpose; done carelessly they just read as an unfinished tattoo.
  • It scales down badly. The whole effect is line density, and shrinking a design pushes those lines together — usually it needs redrawing at the size you actually want.

Where it sits best

Forearms, thighs and upper arms suit illustrative work, giving the linework the flat surface and the size it needs to stay readable. It rewards being bigger than you first think.
