Lettering tattoo flash
Lettering is the most personal work in tattooing and the least forgiving. A word, a name, a date or a line worth carrying — rendered in script, blackletter, or clean sans type. There is no subject to distract the eye, so everything rests on the letterforms, the spacing and the flow, which is why a good lettering artist is a specialist rather than a generalist.
What to know about lettering work
- Read it aloud, then read it again the next day. Spelling and grammar mistakes in tattoo lettering are common, permanent and entirely avoidable — check the text yourself before the stencil goes on, in the language it is written in.
- Thin script spreads. Fine connecting strokes are the first thing to blur, and once letters run together the word stops being readable. Slightly heavier weight buys decades.
- Shorter is stronger. A single word placed well outlasts a long quote shrunk to fit, both visually and literally.
Where it sits best
Forearms, collarbones, ribs and the inner bicep suit lettering because they give a straight run for the line of text. Avoid fingers and the sides of hands: high-friction placements lose fine letterforms faster than anywhere else on the body.
