Surrealism tattoo flash

Surrealist tattooing takes recognisable things and breaks the rules holding them together — faces dissolving into architecture, anatomy opening onto a landscape, objects melting or floating free of gravity. It leans on realism for its rendering and then does something realism never would, which is why the best pieces look convincing and impossible at the same time.

What to know about surrealism work

  • Composition carries it, not detail. A surreal piece works because of how the elements collide; get the arrangement right and the rendering follows, get it wrong and no amount of shading saves it.
  • It usually wants to be big. Two subjects merging need room to actually merge, and the transition is the part that suffers first when a design is shrunk.
  • Soft dissolving edges age unevenly. Where a form fades into nothing there is no line holding it, so expect those passages to soften sooner than the solid areas around them.

Where it sits best

Thighs, upper arms, backs and ribs give surrealist work the canvas it needs. This is a style to commit space to rather than fit into a gap.
