Traditional tattoo flash
Traditional flash is the oldest working language in tattooing. Heavy black outlines, a small palette, and shapes that stay readable from across a room. It is drawn to survive decades of skin movement and sun, which is why the same roses, daggers and swallows have been tattooed for a century.
What to know about traditional work
- Bold lines age better than fine detail. Traditional work still reads clearly at twenty years; fine line often does not.
- The limited palette is a feature. Red, yellow, green and black were what held up, and they still do.
- Sizing is forgiving. Traditional designs scale down further than most styles before detail collapses.
Where it sits best
Forearms, upper arms and calves suit traditional flash best. The bold shapes want a flat area where the whole design is visible at once.
