Monkey Wrench Tattoo has been part of Santa Rosa's tattoo scene since 1995, when it was founded by Joe Leonard, who came to California from Philadelphia to open his own shop. The studio's name traces back to Joe's early days working in an underground shop in Philadelphia, where he painted "Monkey Wrench" on the walls to disguise it as a mechanic's garage. Joe built a following through years of traveling and tattooing, helping grow Santa Rosa's tattoo community before passing the shop down in 2012 to Wes Andersen, who had worked under him since 2010 and carried the shop's reputation forward with his own dedication to the craft.
Today the studio in Santa Rosa is home to a resident roster of artists alongside rotating guest artists who visit throughout the year, giving clients a range of styles and perspectives to choose from. The shop welcomes walk-ins while encouraging appointments, and it's open six days a week with Mondays and Sundays reserved for scheduled visits only. Clients can book directly with a specific artist or request a match suited to their vision, reflecting a shop culture built on craftsmanship, individual attention, and a long-standing local legacy in Sonoma County's tattoo community.
