Mermaids represent the pull between two worlds, land and sea, human and other, often read as duality or unattainable desire. In tattoo culture they also connect to sailor traditions, symbolising the ocean's beauty alongside its danger. The pin-up styling here leans into classic tattoo flash rather than folklore, so for many wearers the appeal is aesthetic and nautical rather than symbolic.

Where it sits

This is a tall, vertical composition with a clear top-to-bottom flow from sunset to wave crest, making it well suited to the back, thigh, or a long section of the forearm or calf. The width needed for the coral branches on either side means a narrow placement like the inner arm would force cropping. Shrinking it below forearm size would blur the wave linework and lose the coral detail at the edges.

Making it yours

Ask an artist for any of these.

  • Swap the orange sunset for a full moon and blue night sky
  • Remove the coral branches for a simpler rock and wave base
  • Change the tail colour from green to purple or teal
  • Add a companion piece like a ship or anchor nearby
  • Drop the pearl jewellery for plainer shell details
