Hummingbirds are widely read as symbols of joy, energy and resilience, drawing on their real-life stamina in flight, while in some Central and South American traditions they carry associations with love and lost loved ones. The hibiscus adds its own reading, often linked to beauty, femininity and fleeting life since the bloom lasts only a day or two. Paired together, the design usually reads as a straightforward celebration of nature and vitality rather than carrying one fixed meaning.

Where it sits

The diagonal arrangement, bird in flight above, flower and trailing vine below, suits a forearm, upper arm or thigh where that long line can stretch out naturally. It would also work well on the ribs or shoulder blade following the body's curve. Shrinking it down much would blur the fine feather striations and the hibiscus stamen detail, so it needs a reasonably generous canvas.

Making it yours

Ask an artist for any of these.

  • Drop the trailing curled vine for a more compact composition
  • Swap the hibiscus for a different regional flower like plumeria
  • Change the colour palette to warmer tones for a different bird species
  • Reduce to just the hummingbird alone for a smaller piece
  • Add a second flower or bud to balance the composition
