He began his tattoo career in 2012 at Blu Gorilla Tattoo in Charleston, South Carolina, working his way up through management before earning a formal apprenticeship. That decade of experience across multiple studios led him to open his own shop, transforming a longtime Dayton fixture known locally as "Brownie's Barber" into a fully renovated tattoo studio, with the floor, sinks, and lighting all chosen with intention. The shop opened its current location on October 14th, 2025, following months of demolition, planning, and buildout.
The studio operates by appointment only, with hours Friday through Monday, 10am to 6pm. Chad emphasizes technical precision and consistency, describing his focus on applying each tattoo as perfectly as possible and using high-quality equipment from needles to aftercare products. The approach centers on strong communication and attentive client care throughout the process. Described as a modern shop with a classic take, Cross Your Heart blends a warm, welcoming space with the old-school character of the building's history, aiming to make getting tattooed a comfortable, unhurried experience for every client who walks through the door.
