Tattoo Charlie's has been part of Baltimore, Maryland since 1938, making it America's second oldest continuously running tattoo shop. It was founded by Charlie Geizer, who began working in the tattoo trade in 1915 through traveling carnivals and circuses before opening his own shop, at one point tattooing as many as 100 sailors a day. The shop passed to his protégé Dennis Watkins, whose wife Gale became Maryland's first female tattoo artist, and later to Sam Mirkin in June 2013, who continues to preserve its legacy today.
The studio embraces a strong sense of pride, respect, and tradition, with vintage photographs of tattooed clients and imagery of Charlie himself displayed throughout the space. It stands as both a Baltimore landmark and a piece of American tattoo history, having survived a wave of 1953 health department regulations that closed every other tattoo shop in the city. Walk-ins are always welcome, while larger, more detailed projects are handled by appointment. The shop also offers piercing services alongside its tattoo work, carrying forward decades of craftsmanship and dedication to quality.
