The winged, rearing horse draws on the Pegasus myth, associated with freedom, inspiration and the transcendence of ordinary limits. In Greek tradition Pegasus carried thunderbolts for Zeus and was linked to poetic inspiration through the Muses' spring, so the tattoo often reads as a symbol of creative drive or breaking free from constraint. Some wearers simply value it as an image of power and grace rather than referencing the mythology directly.

Where it sits

This is a tall, vertical composition with the wings spreading wide at the top and the tail trailing down and out to one side, which suits a back piece, thigh or the length of a forearm or calf. The asymmetric wingspan and flowing mane and tail need horizontal room too, so a narrow strip like a single upper arm panel would crowd the feathers and hair detail. Shrinking it much below shoulder-to-hip scale will lose the fine muscle shading and individual feather lines.

Making it yours

Ask an artist for any of these.

  • Drop one wing for a side-on profile that fits a narrower space
  • Add a moon or cloud backdrop behind the raised hooves
  • Simplify the feather detail for a smaller forearm version
  • Introduce colour in the mane and tail, keep the body greyscale
  • Pair it with lightning bolts to reference the Zeus connection
