Polynesian SunHummingbirds are widely read as symbols of joy, resilience and lightness, often chosen to mark moments of healing or to commemorate a lost loved one, since in some cultures they're seen as visiting spirits. Paired with a hibiscus flower, the design also leans into tropical or Hawaiian associations, and the two together simply reinforce a nature and vitality theme. There's no single fixed meaning, so most people choose it for personal or aesthetic reasons rather than strict symbolism.
Where it sits
The composition is wide and roughly diagonal, with the bird's wings fanning out to one side and the flower anchoring the other, so it suits the shoulder, upper arm, thigh or shoulder blade where that horizontal spread has room to breathe. It would also wrap nicely around the upper forearm or calf. Shrinking it too far will blur the fine stippling in the petals and the feather scalework on the bird's throat.
