Karma Tattoo Studio is Erie, Pennsylvania's first all-custom tattoo studio, founded by Gentle Josh, who began tattooing in 1998 after being apprenticed by "Gypsy" Mike and mentored by Dave Steele. Before opening Karma, he worked at and managed Ink Assassins, but grew disillusioned with the typical street shop atmosphere, its ego-driven culture, and general disrespect for clients. That experience shaped Karma's custom-only approach, built around a more considered and client-focused studio environment in Erie.
Gentle Josh describes himself as a well-rounded artist capable of tackling nearly any concept a client brings to him, though if pressed to define his own style, he calls it "Japanese American fusion." Over more than a decade at Karma, he has continued to develop his craft, and by his own account is doing the best work of his career. He has also apprenticed a number of artists who have gone on to successful careers of their own. The studio's custom tattoo work is central to its identity, reflecting a dedicated, artist-driven alternative to conventional walk-in shop tattooing in the Erie area.
