Universal Rites Tattoo, located in Ashland, Oregon, operates by appointment only, offering a personalized, custom approach to body art rather than walk-in shop service. Owner and artist Benja views each tattoo as a deeply personal collaboration, beginning with an in-depth consultation to understand a client's personality, intentions, and the significance behind their desired piece. Notes, measurements, and careful preparation follow before any design is finalized, ensuring the resulting artwork reflects the client's individuality and story.
The studio treats tattooing as more than a transaction, describing the process as an unforgettable, almost ceremonial experience akin to traditions found in cultures around the world. Comfort, privacy, and sterility are treated as essential during the tattooing stage, with the atmosphere tailored to each individual. Portfolios from multiple artists showcase a range of custom work and original artwork, reflecting years of experience gained working in tattoo shops before establishing this more intimate, appointment-based practice in Ashland.
