Velvet Lotus Tattoo has been Iowa City's home for quality, professional tattoos since opening in August of 2013, offering a clean, sterile, yet comfortable and friendly environment. The studio is owned and operated by Michelle Balhan, a professional tattoo artist since 1996, and the team's combined experience totals over 25 years. Clients can bring in their own designs, collaborate with an artist, or choose from available flash, with every tattoo custom-designed through a sit-down consultation covering everything from flowers and animals to geometric and traditional work.
The artist roster includes Michelle Balhan, known for vivid color and versatile, emotion-driven designs; Kat Keller, who specializes in illustrative, American traditional, and neo-traditional styles; and apprentice Hona Brielle Mattson, who works in bold outlines and vivid color. New, sterile needles and single-use ointments are used for every client, and the shop is state-licensed and inspected annually. Walk-ins are welcome, and free touch-ups are offered within the first year of getting tattooed.
