Sanctum Tattoos and Comics is a Birmingham, Alabama studio built on the idea that its focus is art, whether it's ink on the page or ink in your skin. Operating for ten years, the shop combines a working tattoo parlor with a comic shop, hair salon, and web-store under one roof, creating a space where tattoo culture and comic art culture intersect. Walk-in tattoos are available on a limited basis, and clients can also schedule directly with individual artists through their portfolios, sending reference photos, sizing details, and style inspiration ahead of their appointment.
The resident artists bring varied specialties to the shop. Aaron Hamilton began tattooing in 2005 and moved into it full-time in 2007, drawing heavily from comic book art and horror cinema iconography while working in both traditional and black-and-gray techniques. Avery Johnson, who started tattooing in 2023 and holds a graphic design certification from Auburn University, specializes in illustrative black-and-gray work and American traditional designs, with influences ranging from graffiti writers to printmakers. The studio is open Tuesday through Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and shares updates and new work through its social media channels.
