Tattoo Studio ISHI

Tattoo Studio Ishi sits in the heart of Düsseldorf, dedicated entirely to Horimono, the traditional Japanese tattoo art form. The studio has been tattooing since 1992, bringing over 25 years of experience to its craft. Rather than operating as a high-volume tattoo shop, it focuses exclusively on custom work in Japanese style, using Tebori, the traditional hand-poking method, to create full bodysuits and other horimono pieces. Each client receives a unique design drawn specifically for them, rooted in ukiyoe prints, Suikoden heroes, and Japanese folklore and mythology, reflecting an artistic lineage passed down through apprenticeship under Master Horimitsu Sensei.

Alongside tattooing, the studio practices Sumi-e, the traditional Japanese ink painting technique, used to hand-draw each custom horimono design before it becomes a tattoo. Visitors can also explore a gallery of tattoo and painting work, videos showing Tebori in progress, and background on the history and meaning of horimono. The studio works by appointment only, from Monday to Saturday, and welcomes visitors for consultations. It also offers official merchandise, including T-shirts, gift cards, and shopping bags, extending its dedication to traditional Japanese tattoo culture beyond the tattooing itself.
