Tennessee enforces strict tattoo licensing laws through the state health department.
Licensing & Training
- Artists must obtain a Tattoo License from the Tennessee Department of Health.
- Completion of a minimum one-year tattoo apprenticeship is required.
- Artists must complete a bloodborne pathogens training course and pass a state exam.
Studio & Health Regulations
- All tattoo studios must have a Body Art Facility License.
- Studios must pass annual health inspections and comply with state sanitation laws.
- All tattooing equipment must be autoclave sterilized or single-use.
Age Restrictions
- Minors under 18 years old cannot receive tattoos, even with parental consent — except a narrow carve-out allowing 16-17 year-olds to get a cover-up tattoo with written parental consent, the parent present, and proof of guardianship (Tenn. Code § 62-38-211).
