Michigan has statewide regulations requiring tattoo artists and body art studios to be licensed.
Licensing & Training
- All tattoo artists must work in a licensed body art facility.
- Completion of a bloodborne pathogens training course is mandatory.
- Studios must apply for a Body Art Facility License through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Studio & Health Regulations
- Studios must be inspected by local health authorities annually.
- Strict sterilization and disposal regulations must be followed.
- Single-use needles and disposable gloves must be used.
Age Restrictions
- Minors under 18 years old require prior written, in-person parental consent — notarization is not required by state law (MCL § 333.13102).
