Kentucky enforces strict health and sanitation standards for tattoo artists and shops.

Licensing & Training

  • All tattoo artists must be registered with the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
  • Completion of a bloodborne pathogens training course is mandatory.
  • Shops must have a licensed tattoo artist on-site at all times.

Studio & Health Standards

  • Tattoo studios must be inspected and licensed by the local health department.
  • Strict sanitation procedures must be followed, including autoclave sterilization of all reusable equipment.
  • Single-use gloves and needles are required for each procedure.

Age Restrictions

  • Minors under 16 years old cannot receive tattoos under any circumstances.
  • Minors 16-17 years old require notarized consent from a custodial parent or guardian (902 KAR 45:065, § 7).
