South Africa does not have a national licensing system for tattoo artists, but health regulations apply to tattooing.

Licensing & Training

  • Tattoo artists must register with local health authorities in some regions.
  • Completion of a bloodborne pathogens and hygiene training course is recommended.
  • Some provinces require tattoo businesses to obtain a business license.

Studio & Health Regulations

  • Studios must comply with strict hygiene and sanitation regulations.
  • Equipment must be autoclave sterilized to prevent infections.
  • Clients must be provided with aftercare instructions and consent forms.

Age Restrictions

  • South Africa has no law addressing tattooing of minors — the Children's Act does not mention tattooing. The 18+ norm, even overriding parental consent, is entirely industry self-regulation.

For official regulations, visit the South African Department of Health.
