Licensing & Training
- Tattoo artists are required to register with their local council and meet health and safety regulations.
- Completion of a bloodborne pathogens and infection control course is recommended.
- Some regions, like Auckland, require a Health Protection License for tattoo studios.
Studio & Health Regulations
- Studios must pass health inspections and follow sanitation laws.
- All tattooing equipment must be autoclave sterilized or single-use.
- Studios must provide clients with aftercare instructions and consent forms.
Age Restrictions
- New Zealand has no national statute setting a tattoo age or consent requirement. Legally, 16-year-olds are generally treated as able to consent for themselves; the under-18 parental-consent norm comes from industry self-regulation (TAANZ) and some local council bylaws, not national law.
