The Netherlands has strict regulations for tattooing, requiring artists and studios to be licensed.

Licensing & Training

  • Artists must obtain a Tattoo License from the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).
  • Completion of a mandatory hygiene and infection control course is required.
  • Licenses must be renewed periodically.

Studio & Health Regulations

  • Studios must pass a health inspection before being licensed.
  • Strict sterilization procedures must be followed, including autoclave sterilization of equipment.
  • Studios must display their NVWA license publicly.

Age Restrictions

  • Tattooing is prohibited entirely under age 12. Minors aged 12-16 may be tattooed only with a parent or guardian's explicit consent and physical presence. From age 16 onward, minors may consent for themselves.
