New Mexico has strict licensing laws for tattoo artists and body art establishments.

Licensing & Training

  • Artists must obtain a Body Art Operator License from the New Mexico Environmental Health Department.
  • Completion of a bloodborne pathogens training course is required.
  • All tattoo shops must be licensed and must renew their license annually.

Studio & Health Regulations

  • Studios must follow strict sanitation and sterilization requirements.
  • An autoclave must be used for sterilizing equipment.
  • Studios must maintain client records for at least three years.

Age Restrictions

  • Minors under 18 years old require written parental consent to receive a tattoo.
